We know HCR passed this weekend. Unfortunately for Tea Partiers, we also know some of their fellow protestors hurled hate speech and spit at minority MCs as they walked into the Capitol. This never really bodes well for a group, especially one championing change. A back to the future change can’t possibly be what they were going for.
In an intentionally disorganized party, there is no leader, cohesive strategy or discipline for unruly members. For Tea Partiers interested in slinging racial or gay slurs, there will be no repercussions. They won’t lose a perch or perks; there are effectively no drawbacks whatsoever.
This may not seem like a huge problem since a pattern of bad behavior will theoretically put a group out of business. But Republicans want to keep the group alive. They are eager to attract the Tea Party, its members and their votes. By absorbing a group consisting of ungovernable mavericks, you’re bound to attract unwanted attention that stems from controversial outbursts and demonstrations.
After months of courting the TP vote, the right might get its wish of an energized, rowdy base. But with the votes comes recognition of Partiers’ misbehavior as a reflection of Republican ideals. That’s no good for a party looking to free itself of the “Party of No” mantle.
If you want TP votes and support, Republicans can’t cry foul when they’re considered one and the same. The GOP can’t afford to look backward, old or outdated.
While some Dem policies have gotten a lukewarm reception, one thing is certain overall: Americans are looking for progress, for friends in D.C. To have a group of people wearing tea bag hats, wielding bull horns and shouting slurs as your most visible spokespeople can only spell trouble.
